My polio legs may not look badly effected, but that is not the case. The best way for me to explain is to show you my legs without my pants. I’ll undress so that you can see how much smaller my left leg is compared to my right, how it does not move as quickly as my other leg and how my foot will drag if I am not careful.
Let me walk to the living room where I can lower myself to the floor and you can see how my legs react to touch and movement by my touching them with my hands.
Then walk back to the bedroom with me so I can dress and we’ll go outside together where I’ll show you what a challenge a staircase can be for me.
In my country we use the name crippled to describe someone with a disability. It is not a bad word to me. It is part of who I am and is not offensive when spoken kindly to me.
